Simone Dinnerstein is an American Pianist, who by raising her own funds, recorded the Goldberg Variations by J.S. Bach.  It was released in 2007.  The recording hit to top of the classical charts within a week of it's released and she has subsequently signed with Sony Classical and released 2 more Albums.  Ms. Dinnerstein is a graduate of The Juilliard School and resides in Brooklyn.  I had the pleasure of hearing her perform and give a master class in Paris, France last summer.
