Marian Anderson (1897-1993)

Marian Anderson
So much history overlaps between the uprising of women's rights as well as civil rights.  The story of Marian Anderson is no exception.  Anderson was the first African American (male or female) to perform with the Metropolitan Opera Company.  This particular achievement was not until 1955, when she performed  Ulrica in Verdi's Un ballo in maschera. This would be her first and last performance on stage playing an operatic role.  There were such fantastic reviews of the performance, especially considering Anderson was 57 when she debuted.  Other performances of Anderson's included John F. Kennedy's inauguration and several benefit concerts for the NAACP.
